Chapter Nineteen

Sometimes the world gets away from you. Time passed, but I missed what was going on as I sleepwalked through life for days. I’d burned up hours working on Cal’s science project. The rest of the week I worked, wrote two garbled, worthless papers, and nudged Mom on a few trips out for food and medicine.

On Friday, I encountered the return of paper number one with a B minus on it and a pop quiz in American History III. By the end of the day, the chemistry test in front of me served as a reminder that while I had no trouble learning, I still needed to study. Everything on the test had a hint of familiarity, but I couldn’t nail down the answers. Like reading in a foreign language and recognizing a word or two. I handed my test in complete, but full of half-assed guesses formed from questionable logic, leaving me shaking my head. Now was not the time for falling grades.

Charlotte waited by my locker when I shuffled out. She kept glancing around as if looking for hidden microphones or cameras. When she spotted me, she stared without a single blink until I reached her. “Is there anything else you’re not telling me?” she whispered. “I’d like to know now so I don’t get any more surprises.”

She hadn’t been at lunch and her sudden appearance accompanied by a veiled accusation sent my heart thudding. “Excuse me?” I asked.

After checking the hall in both directions, she pulled me behind a propped door. “I was only kidding about Chayton. You don’t have to give me the play by play, but this is different. Couldn’t you have warned me that a detective was going to come knocking at my door? I didn’t know anything, of course, since someone never mentioned to me that she witnessed a freaking kidnapping, but seriously? You never thought you could share this with me? Am I that bad of a friend?”

I stood with my jaw slack, bobbing it up and down while I tried to find the words. All I could think was that if Detective Carver had talked to Charlotte, she was widening the search and either had, or planned to talk to Chayton too. “Wh-when? When did you talk to her?”

She creased her brow, as if she was irritated that I hadn’t answered her question. “Last night. I would have called right after, but my parents got all worried and said I shouldn’t upset you.”

“What did she…what did she say?” I backed further into the cover of the space created by the door so no one coming down the hall could see me.

“She told me about Elizabeth. That she disappeared. Wanted to know if we had ever talked about it. She lost interest pretty quick when she found out I didn’t know you back then.”

I grabbed my churning stomach and felt my face go cold as the color drained away. Charlotte softened and reached her hand to my arm. “Hey, sorry about coming down on you.
